Korora the Talking Penguin bobbed in the lake of the Dawn Treader Ride, waiting for the Dawn Treader to come by again. She had tried to think of different things to do for the faire. She/d volunteered to be in the dunking booth, but no one thought it was funny to send a Penguin into the water. She thought of having a fish throw where humans threw fish and Penguins caught them with their beaks, but no one had been impressed with that idea. Her husband, Heketoro, bobbed near. Korora looked at him, “I still think my idea about the fish throw was a good one.”
“I told Melanippe your idea, and she liked it, but she thought there would need to be more to it to be a game.”
So they bobbed, waiting for the Dawn Treader again. The naiads also waited..
The ride started began, and they started swimming beside it. “Penguins!” children from the ship cried, pointing at them. The naiads began singing, and Korora couldn't hear the children on the ship.
Korora sighed when she heard the naiads, 'They get to sing,' she thought. Korora had also suggested that the Penguins sing, for they were very good, but the humans seemed to think otherwise. Melanippe had been nice, but Korora thought she had shuddered when Korora suggested the Penguins sing. She didn't know why, for their honking was particularly fine.
The Penguins began porpoising alongside the ship. If no one appreciated their singing, at least people liked to see them jump in and out of the ater. Korora's daughters, Tahupaia and Ponaturi, began porpoising and then called out to their mother, “Tag, you are it!” They raced away, porpoising as they went, and Korora chased after them. Once the ship finished its circuit, they stopped.
Korora bobbed in the water, tired. “I feel like I'm 51!”
When the ship came around again, Korora let the younger penguins do the porpoising, and she merely swam by the ship. She saw a king on the Dawn Treader holding something, and their eyes met. The freckle-faced kid grinned and then threw something at her. It was a fish! She caught it with her beak and ate it. She had participated in a fish throw! The boy laughed, and Korora nodded her thanks for the free fish.
“Johnnie! Don't do that,” a motherly-looking woman said.
A girl beside the boy jumped up and down, “I wanna feed the penguins.”
Other children nearby began jumping up and down, “Me too!” As they ship went to port, she heard a chorus of sad children.
The next time the ship came around, several kids threw fish overboard. Some Penguins stopped porpoising to catch the fish, but others loyally kept porpoising. Korora found herself pushed out of the fish zone by the more aggressive ones.
But it was time got her break, so she swam toward the shore. “I wonder if there is Squid-on-a-Stick,” she murmured. But she saw the Golden Biscuit first. Her beak watered over cold, poached pavender, baked pavender, and eel pie. But she had to go for the kippers. She saw beside a pegasus and a Talking Cat, all casually mixed in with everyone else. This was a faire to beat all others.
