| The Scroll Cart Drill Team Parades Through the Agora |

Damaris waited for their turn to enter the parade. She reminded herself that they had practiced very hard, and everyone who saw them practice had loved their drill cart routine. Just because this crowd looked bigger and was not necessarily disposed to be positive… No, it was a lovely day in the month of Skirophorion, and the Risen Phoenix Parade was in Athens. The crowd would have to be in a good mood because the floats before them had been so magnificent. And starting the parade in front of the over 30-year old Parthenon was just inspired.
In her mind, Damaris went through their trouble spots one last time. Then their musicians began the syrto music they would dance to. Damaris nodded to herself. She loved this music and felt it was a good choice; Homer had even mentioned it.
The parade didn't officially begin until they were at the agora, but some began by walking down the long slope that led from the acropolis to the agora below. Damaris eyed Mariamne, and they began moving their carts in synchronized patterns to the syrto music. The team moved their carts into a formation so that they looked like an “alpha” and then a “beta.” So far, so good!
Halfway down the slope, Damaris reminded herself to look at the view and saw the agora below them. The crowds were huge! Had the whole world come to see the parade? She had to focus on the routine.
The land leveled out, and they began parading on the packed gravel that was the Panathenaic Way. The famous road was named for the annual Lesser Panathenaia and the every-four-years Greater Panathenaia.
The crowd clapped when they finished their routine. Damaris beamed briefly and then focused on beginning the routine again.
They soon paraded past the Altar of the Twelve Gods, which marked the center of Athens. It was one of the few monuments allowed in the large open square in the middle of the agora. As the Altar was also an asylum, Damaris hoped no Temple of Ares ever came near the Altar.*
Damaris noticed that her hand position wasn’t the same as Mariamne’s, so she quickly corrected her position.
Then on their left was the Stoa Peisianaktios, or Porch of Peisianax [now called the Painted Stoa]. Damaris hoped to study the lovely paintings after the parade. Because of the parade, for once, there were no philosophers debating in the stoa. So many philosophers debated here that Damaris felt one day someone would be named for the stoa!**
She realized she was presenting more of her torso than Mariamne at a certain point, so she corrected that, too.
They slowly turned the corner and started going southwest, The Stoa Peisianaktios was now behind them. The Royal Stoa was on their right. It was established by King Archon, who also established the Areopagus and the Boule or Council of the Four Hundred.
Damaris focused on the routine again. Why was she silently playing tour guide?
Then the Stoa of Zeus Eleutherias was on her right. No one was debating here today, for everyone was craning to see the parade. Damaris thought of the painting of Theseus, the founder of democracy, that was here.
She realized she was drifting away from Mariamne in their patterns and needed to get closer in. Mariamne realized she was doing the same.
Beyond the parade route was the rectangular Temple of Hephaistos, or Hephaisteion. She overheard a bystander ask another, “Are we in front of the Temple of Hephaistos or Theseus?”
Damaris paused in her routine and nearly answered the stranger, but she kept her composure. How could anyone ask that question? It was obviously a temple dedicated to Hephaistos. Just because it showed the Labors of Herakles on one long side and the Labors of Theseus on the other… They might as well ask if the roof would hold, or something.***
They passed the Bouleterion, or Council House, on their right. The male Athenian citizens served for one year and met here every day except for festival days, like today. Some were here anyway, cheering the crowd on. Damaris was pleased when they liked the drill cart team.
They passed the round Tholos on their right. This was where the executive committee of the boule, the prytaneis, met. Some even spent the night here so Athenians had access to legal help any time. Many of those who had spent the night before of the Tholos had staked out excellent seats.
Then to the right was the trapezoidal Strategeion, and to the left was the Law Court. Further left was the South Stoa with many of the vendors.
Damaris knew she was nearing the end of the parade. What a thrill it had been to be a part of such a lively event! But what a relief to be nearly finished, for her feet were killing her!
*The Temple of Ares, the God of War, is later built right by it.
**The Stoics are later named for this stoa.
***The Temple of Hephaistos, which archaeologists once thought might be dedicated to Theseus, is now the best preserved Doric temple on the mainland.
