"Get a move on! People are going to be wanting to sit in those things come about sunrise!" I called up to the guys working on the bleachers.
"And you! Yes, you in the porta-potty uniform! How many have you got set up?"
"Weell, I dunno ma'am, you want I should count them?" the man drawled lazily as he grinned toothlessly at me.
"Weell, yeah, I reckon I do, now that you've offered," I mimicked. Dropping the drawl, I continued in what I hoped was a tone of voice which would get the lazy sod moving about his business.
"I contracted for 50 of them, so there had better be that many come sunup, or whoever you work for isn't going to get paid, and then I reckon you won't be either. So get on with it, and get back to me!"
Hurrying off in the direction of the staging area, I found the crew responsible for roping off the space lounging around a cooler, chattering and laughing as they sipped their beers, the job only half done.
"Were y'all planning to get these barricades finished before the parade, I hope? Do it now! Or I take that cooler away with me!" I smiled sweetly at them.
Checking further, I see that the trashcans are still on the truck that brought them, and that the banners I'd had made are draped over a stone wall, still waiting to be hung. I tried to think back to previous parades, and for the life of me I couldn't remember ever having so much trouble with the contractors.
Hoping for more positive results to preparations in the vendors' area, I was heartened to see that the booths were almost completed, and I caught the scents of cooking food. Everyone seemed to be busy, unlike those laborers I'd run into. Capitalism at its best, I presume.
